Keyword Help

  • Keywords that are phrases (words next to each other):
When keywords are phrases such as intensive care unit, just enclose the phrase in quotes. "intensive care unit" .
To add the phrase "software engineer" and the word c++ type:
    "software engineer" c++
  • Keywords are case insensitive.
  • Please note that common connection words such as :a, an, and, or ... are ignored. The AND/OR button lets you specify how the words/phrases are used in the search.
How to use keywords in SmartMail:
When you sign up for SmartMail you enter keywords to specify types of job postings you wish to receive. Daily searches are made through all job postings by looking for matches to the keywords that you have specified. You may enter as many keywords as you wish but be careful to select "AND" or "OR" for the type of search you wish performed.
  • Selecting "AND" means a job posting will match your keywords ONLY if ALL of the keywords you specified are found within that job posting.
  • Selecting "OR" means that matches will be found when ANY of the keywords you specified are found.
Another way to refine the search is to use quotation marks around any group of words that you want to find an exact match for.

Examples of Keywords and Search Results:
Keywords:    network administrator unix
Search Type:        "OR"
Search Results:
Any job posting containing the word "network"  "administrator"     or   "Unix"   will be sent to you.
Keywords:    network adminstrator unix
Search Type:        "AND"
Search Results:
Any job posting containing the word "network"  "administrator"     or   "Unix"   will be sent to you.
Keywords:    "network administrator" unix
        (*Note the quotation marks!)
Search Type:        "OR"
Search Results:
Any job posting containing either "network administrator"    or   "Unix"    will be sent to you.
Keywords:    "network administrator" unix
        (*Note the quotation marks!)
Search Type:        "AND"
Search Results:
Only job postings containing BOTH "network  administrator"    and    "Unix"   will be sent to you.

Another important thing to improve the quality of your matches is to closely examine the keywords you select. Try to avoid using words that are very common and may appear in many types of job postings. A BAD example of a keyword would be the word "experience."   This word may appear in any type of job posting.  Refine your search to something concrete such as: "C programming experience."  This will help to narrow the search results. It is better NOT TO USE COMMON WORDS at all;  Searching for "C programming" or "C programmer" alone will probably yield better results.

Hope this helps!
